HOT
BLUEGRASS AND BARBECUE
WARM
UP A WINTER'S EVE AT ROSE GARDEN COFFEEHOUSE
If
hot bluegrass music and a home cooked chicken barbecue dinner sound
like a good way to stay warm on a winter¹s eve, then the Rose
Garden Coffeehouse in Mansfield may be just the place to go on Saturday,
March 1.
Northern
Lights, a New England musical institution since 1975, performs with
a great combination of energy, intensity, and vocal and instrumental
gymnastics. Although they can play straight ahead bluegrass with
the best of them, they also have the ability to mix in some western
swing, blues, jazz, cajun, and even classical to form a sound that
is their own. While pushing the musical form, the band is committed
to the same philosophy that inspired Bill Monroe to create in the
1930s what is now called bluegrass.
"Monroe
was a revolutionary," says Taylor Armerding, mandolin player
and lead singer. "If he were a young man today, he'd probably
be pushing things further than we are." Northern Lights has
appeared at major festivals and concert venues from New England
to California and has won numerous awards, including a Boston Music
Award.
In
what has become a tradition, the host Orthodox Congregational Church
will serve a barbecue dinner immediately preceding the concert at
6:00 PM. Those attending will be permitted to claim preferred seating
before the concert doors open at 7:30 PM. The dinner will be hosted
by church volunteers and all proceeds will be used to support church
activities. Advance reservations must be made for the dinner and
the 8:00 PM concert combination. Tickets are $20 and must be reserved
by e-mailing info@barrowsins.com
or by calling 508-339-7260. Tickets for the concert alone are $12
and will be available at the door. Advance tickets for the show
alone are $10.
The
Rose Garden Coffeehouse is presented at the Orthodox Congregational
Church, 17 West Street in Mansfield, MA. It is a non-alcoholic and
non-smoking venue for the enjoyment of top quality folk, bluegrass,
and other acoustic music. The March 1 concert will mark Northern
Lights' 12th straight annual appearance.
